Sensitive advice from a family law specialist
Staying together for the sake of the kids?
For many people, Christmas is an exciting time of year and a wonderful opportunity to spend extra time with friends, family and loved ones. For those experiencing relationship difficulties, however, it can bring problems into even sharper focus and highlight the need to explore a fresh start at the beginning of a new year.
The latest available annual divorce statistics, which were published by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) in November, show that divorce was most common in couples aged between 40 and 44 – one of the most likely age groups to include parents of young children.
If you are a parent considering divorce, a poll by family law organisation Resolution could help to ease your concerns about children being caught up in the process. The survey found that most children – 82 per cent – do not think that parents should stay together for their sake. The survey also revealed that a huge majority thought it was important that they did not have to choose between parents. One of the children questioned said: ‘Don’t stay together for
a child’s sake, better to divorce than stay together for another few years and divorce on bad terms’. Another suggested that children ‘will certainly be very upset at the time but will often realise, later on, that it was for the best.’
If you are considering divorce or are concerned about the impact the process may have on your children, it may help to speak to the experts. At Wosskow Brown, we offer a free initial appointment in which we find out about your situation and explain how we can help. We can also provide a fixed-fee quote so you can budget effectively, and discuss payment plans to ease the financial burden now that legal aid is no longer
available for most matters of family law.
